ABSTRACT:
Cleome viscosa Linn. is a herb distributed across tropical and subtropical regions and is recognized for its importance in traditional medicine. It has been utilized in various indigenous practices for conditions such as inflammation, microbial infections, fever, gastrointestinal disorders, skin problems, and wound care. Phytochemical studies have identified multiple classes of bioactive compounds in the plant, including flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, and glycosides, which are considered responsible for its biological effects. Preclinical investigations have reported a range of activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, analgesic, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective effects. These actions are associated with its ability to counter oxidative stress, influence inflammatory signaling molecules, and regulate biochemical pathways linked to metabolic dysfunction. Emerging research also points toward its potential relevance in managing chronic conditions related to oxidative damage. This review summarizes available information on its traditional uses, chemical constituents, and pharmacological properties. It also highlights the importance of conducting well-structured clinical studies to confirm its safety profile and therapeutic effectiveness, as well as its potential for future drug development.
