ABSTRACT:
Psoriasis is a multifactorial inflammatory skin disorder characterized by abnormal epidermal proliferation, erythema, scaling, and skin thickening. Conventional therapeutic approaches are available for its management; however, prolonged treatment may cause undesirable side effects. Consequently, increasing attention has been directed toward the development of herbal formulations as safer alternatives. The present investigation was designed to formulate topical creams incorporating ethanolic flower extract of Clitoria ternatea at concentrations of 10% and 20% (w/w) and to assess their anti-psoriatic activity. The developed formulations were examined for various quality attributes, including appearance, pH, viscosity, homogeneity, spreadability, extrudability, and storage stability. UV-visible spectrophotometry was employed to analyze the extract. Anti-psoriatic efficacy was evaluated using an imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like mouse model for 14 days. Disease severity was determined by monitoring erythema, scaling, skin thickness, PASI score, and body weight changes throughout the experimental period. Both formulations showed desirable physicochemical characteristics and maintained their stability during storage. Application of the extract-containing creams resulted in a noticeable improvement in psoriatic symptoms compared with untreated diseased animals. The cream containing 20% extract exhibited superior activity when compared with the 10% formulation. Overall, the findings suggest that Clitoria ternatea flower extract possesses promising anti-psoriatic potential and may serve as an effective herbal topical therapy for psoriasis.
